KS WORKSHOPS

    AlphaSmart PRO

This is essentially a low cost, portable keyboard that students can use at their work areas. When the written project is completed, the student transfers the text to a ‘regular’ computer, formats it, does a spell check, adds graphics, etc. Then the project is printed and the student produces a crisp, professional (well almost) looking project.

It takes a while to teach kids how to upload text, add graphics etc -- but it’s worth it. Paras and other helpers can assist you in this. If you have older students, consider having each one teach one. You might even award CERTIFIED TRAINING CERTIFICATES or some such thing to get helpers.

Here’s how I’ve used it.

Have students type spelling tests on the AlphaSmart. Good for hesitant writers or especially for those with reversal (b/d) type problems. They seem to be able to tell the difference between a B and a D on the keyboard !!! A para or other helper gives the test and prints it for the teacher. Obviously, no spell checkers allowed. [Smile]

Written compositions
Students do all prewriting and editing steps in the conventional way -- with paper and pencil.

When the project is complete, students type it on the AlphaSmart Pro.

NOTE: I’ve found it really important to write on the student’s rough draft the specific AlphaSmart Pro he’s using and the file number. Saves time finding the student’s work if it isn’t completed in one sitting.

For new users or those with limited keyboarding skills, I set a timer for 8 to 10 minutes. At the end of that time, I offer to (or have a helper) complete typing the paper. Students can choose to have me type it or they can keep going for another 8 to 10 minutes. At the end of what is usually about 20 minutes, I generally have the student let me finish typing the project. The student READS the composition to me - telling me how to spell most words and verbally indicating capitalization, punctuation, etc.. At first, I required students to do all the typing but it was too tedious for those with limited typing ability.

Students then proceed to upload and print the project.
