BOOK HOLDER

Studies I’ve read state that it is beneficial to have reading materials an optimum distance and angle. Most schools I’ve worked in provide flat desks. Some schools have stopped using individual desks and now use tables. Flat tables are great for some students but those with learning problems might do better with reading material at an angle rather than flat.

At your local bookstore you can purchase book holders designed to keep the reading material at a comfortable distance and angle. Consider purchasing some and trying them out with your child/students.

Book holders also come in handy when students must copy from a book. Prop the book in the holder. Use post it notes to keep track of where the student is in copying. Copying seems easier with a book holder for many students.

Some students use book holders for about an hour and then switch to a flat reading surface. Variety in the placement of the reading material seems to help some students work more efficiently.
