IMPLIED COMPLIANCE
This strategy is used for the student that is resistant, defiant, disobedient, obstinate, or otherwise “difficult to motivate." In order for this strategy to be effective, the task (work) presented for the child to complete
MUST be a task you KNOW the student CAN
DO.
Here’s how it works --
You present the task to the child giving necessary directions. Satisfy yourself that the child understands the task.
When (and he/she will) the child says, mutters or murmurs a statement such as -- “I don’t want to do this. I ‘m not going to do this. You can’t make me. This is too hard.
And other "obnoxious statements.”
Reply --
“I’m certain you can do this.” Or say
“I’m confident you will complete this assignment.”
At this point consider indicating a reasonable time limit for completion of the work. Consider setting a timer. See
Using A Timer or Using A Stop Watch.
The next step is the hardest....
WALK AWAY!!!!!
Leave the child to tackle the task presented. Make no more attempts to prod the student into completing the assignment. At the end of the assigned time limit or upon completion of the assignment, collect the work and again say, “I’m certain you did well on this assignment.” Ignore any negative remarks the student might make at this time.
Grade the work ASAP. Return the graded work right away hopefully within a few minutes. Your comment as you return it should be positive and reflect earned praise. If the work is not acceptable, say, “I must have misjudged your ability.
I’ll do better next time.”
Don’t give up!!! Pick another assignment and try the strategy again. Students will
generally rise to your expectations.
If this method doesn’t work, the problem is probably with the assignment chosen -- not the method. I have found this method to be successful with
most of the children I’ve found it necessary to use it with.

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.
