HEAD PHONES

Did your kindergarten teacher use the following technique? -- Mine wanted us to be good listeners so she would ask us to put on our listening ears. I remember we even had paper ears to wear at times to help us remember to listen. I must have impressed me as I still remember it after over 40 years.

Interestingly, some of our ADD/ADHD students don’t have any problem listening. In fact, some are completely distracted by any extraneous noises and have trouble working due to their preoccupation with “what was that noise?” thoughts. They seem to listen to everything -- even the sound of the furnace, pencils writing, people walking by the room -- etc.

To help with this, consider having students wear standard headphones during seat work or quiet work times. It works for some kids. Give it a try.

Afterthought, would ear muffs do the same thing? Maybe.

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.
