HEARING AND READING GO TOGETHER

Historically, teaching reading has gone through many “phases” – the McGuffey Reader, Sight Word approach, Language Experience, Linguistic Programs, Whole Language, Phonics and now – Phonemic Awareness is getting a big push in the teaching of reading circles.

Teachers who successfully work with struggling readers have discovered that hearing and reading go together.

Students MUST be able to identify and compare the sequence of sounds within spoken words (decode).

If students can’t determine the sequence of sounds within words, they simply cannot tell whether what they say matches what they see.  Thus “was” becomes “saw”, “gril” = “girl”, b’s become d’s.  It has nothing to do with sight, paying attention, seeing letters and words backwards or not trying hard enough.

Intensive phonics instruction and drill and practice can help. Emerging readers must become aware of the “bits of sounds” in words – recognize them visually and be able to produce the proper sound.  The catch comes with the idiosyncrasies of the English Language. The letters OU in a word, for example can have up to 4 different sounds. Letter sounds are dependent on surrounding letters, usage in sentences and placement in syllables.

The rules tend to change without rhyme or reason as a struggling reader tries to interpret the written word.

So, what’s the solution?

I could earn zillions if I had an answer to this puzzle.  However, it has been stated by the Lindamood-Bell Learning people that  “when auditory conceptual stimulation is made available to primary students, as an introduction to the reading/spelling process, it accelerates reading and spelling development and prevents disabilities.”
