JUNE 10, 2003 PIG LATIN and PHONEMIC AWARENESS Pig Latin appears to be an excellent predictor of reading success. What is Phonemic Awareness? Through Phonemic Awareness children learn that words are made up of sounds through games, songs, rhymes etc. Phonemic Awareness allows learners to playfully split words into their component sounds and reassemble them into new words which some believe is a precursor to reading. Phonemic Awareness (type) activities below: A classic example is "Pig Latin," the children's game that plays with words by taking off the initial sound, consonant blend or diagraph, sticking the sound at the end and adding the "ay" sound, as in "aintray" for train. Ask your child if two words (that have three speech sounds each) you speak begin with the same speech sound. example: dog digDo the same for final speech sounds in words. example: lot lip Do the same for middle sounds in words. example: fan fun Say to your child, When I add r to ug I make rug. What word do I make if I add t to ug? Expand on this to more than 3 sounds as the student experiences success.Say a word backwards that will be a REAL word when said front wards. example: naf will become fan.
