I AM RETIRED
August 10, 2005 DIAGNOSIS ADD ADHD Now What? Published 10th, 20th & 30th of each month -- USUALLY ** PLEASE SEE DISCLAIMER AT THE END OF THIS DOCUMENT! **
Yes, it's true. I started teaching in 1970. I figure I've personally touched the lives of about 700 students with special needs - those being in my classes. I'd like to think that through this website and newsletters I've had a positive impact on thousands of teachers, parents, school administrators, psychologists, social workers etc. Since there are currently about 560 people getting my tri-monthly newsletter (started in 1999) I hope I've influenced even more. My web server indicates my site gets about 13,000 hits per day. Pretty good for a website built by "the seat of my pants" over the years. School starts here in Kansas this week. Do I miss it? Yeah, I guess so. I showed up at my old stomping grounds about 10 am today to return some items I'd taken home that belong to the school. Of course, that was my stated reason for going back but all the teachers and my principal probably knew I kind of miss them and the excitement (not the work) of getting ready for a new year. Interestingly, on the way home I stopped by the home of a former student (he's 23 and recently married). What a joy to find out how well this young man is handling his life. He is a successful employee, husband and son. I remember the days as a third grader, this child cried, threw stuff and felt he was too stupid to ever do anything right. Looks like I'll continue working with kids as a substitute. Seems like once you see the lights of learning turn on for a special needs kid, it gets you in such a way that you can't retire completely. BTW I am especially interested in neurofeedback for ADD/ADHD. I would welcome any information -- especially personal experiences using neurofeedback -- PlayAttention, BrainTrain, etc. Thanks
