TELEVISION AND ADD/ADHD

How much TV do children in the US watch?

"By the time the average student is eighteen years old, he or she will have spent 22,000 hours watching television. That's twice as much time as he or she will have spent in classroom instruction and more time than in any one activity other than sleeping!"  Conrad Phillip Kottak, Prime Time Society

"The average American child watches five hours per week of television commercials alone."  Myths, Men, and Beer...., AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety

"By age 16, the average American child has seen 200,000 acts of violence on TV, including 33,000 murders."  Rep, Dan Glickman, D-Kansas, House sponsor, Television Violence Act, 1990

Does TV cause violence in children?

A few quotes about this >

"Since 1982, television violence has increased 780%. During that same period, schoolteachers report a nearly 800% increase in aggressive acts on the playground." Phil Phillips. Saturday Morning Mind Control, Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1991

"Strong belief in the reality of TV characters increases violent viewing.... low reading achievement is associated with time spent in viewing media violence." Alice Sterling Honig, "Television and Young Children," in Young Children, Vol. 38, No. 4 1983

"The evidence is becoming overwhelming that just as witnessing violence in the home may contribute to normal adults and children learning and acting out violent behavior, violence on television and movies may lead to the same result." Sally Bedell Smith, "Why TV Won't Let Up On Violence," in The New York Times, January 12, 1984

What are some of the effects of watching television?

It is thought that television promotes fixated eye-movement (staring at the screen). The swift visual changes experienced by watching images on TV are too rapid for the brain to keep up with. As an experiment, I counted the seconds between camera angle changes or switching of images on my TV a few minutes ago.  Most changes were about 3-5 seconds apart -- some commercials rapid fire changes seemed to be less than a second in duration. With this rapid change, the brain doesn't have time to even think about one image before it must focus attention on another one. Brain research (I don't have the exact source handy) shows it takes the cerebral cortex anywhere from 5-10 seconds to engage after a stimulus.

What about TV  related to ADD and ADHD?

IT'S YOUR CHOICE

Get informed about the negative effects (possible brain altering) of TV watching before you set your children down in front of the TV. There are some excellent educational videos, just as there are excellent TV shows --- BUT --- you must be aware of what TV watching may be doing to the brain -- It's not necessarily the TOPIC that is "hurting" children.
